SSEG Registration in South Africa: What You Need & Why It Matters

If you’re installing solar in South Africa, you’ll likely come across the term SSEG — Small-Scale Embedded Generation. It sounds bureaucratic, but registering matters, and it’s simpler than most people expect once you know the steps.

What is SSEG registration?

SSEG registration is how your municipality (or Eskom, if you’re a direct Eskom customer) formally records that you have a private generation system — solar, in most residential cases — connected to your property. It exists for safety (so linesmen know your system exists before doing grid maintenance) and compliance.

Do you legally have to register? Technically yes, for any grid-tied system — including hybrid inverters that can export even a small amount of power. Unregistered systems can create insurance and liability issues if something goes wrong, and some municipalities are increasingly enforcing this.

What you need to register

  1. A valid Certificate of Compliance (CoC) from your installer — issued after commissioning
  2. Your inverter’s technical specification sheet
  3. A single-line diagram of your electrical installation
  4. Proof of ownership / municipal account number
  5. The completed SSEG application form for your specific municipality

Why we handle the CoC automatically

Every WEnergy installation includes final system commissioning and issuance of your Electrical Certificate of Compliance as standard — it’s not an optional extra. Without it, you can’t register your SSEG, your insurer may reject a claim related to your electrical system, and reselling your home becomes harder. See our installation process for exactly how this fits into your install.

Which municipalities are strictest?

City of Cape Town and City of Johannesburg have the most established SSEG processes with online portals. Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and smaller municipalities vary — some still require in-person submission. If you’re unsure what your municipality requires, ask us when we quote you; we deal with this regularly across Gauteng.
